There’s a good chance I know exactly what you’re going through. You see, I was what we call an “accidental” Project Manager. My background is in engineering and technology but, because I managed to develop the ability to lead teams and acomplish goals, business leaders started to call upon me to manage projects for them again and again. Once you get a reputation for being able to make things happen, you sort of get forced into the whole project management thing.
The thing I remember most about those early days of project management was the FRUSTRATION! There’s a ton of books, video and classes out there on Project managment, but it’s just a bunch of crappy plaittitues and theory. I’d read a book that said “communication is key to successful project delivery,” or “the #1 reason projects fail is due to bad requirements,” and I’d think, “no shit Sherlock!” Try as I might, I couldn’t find any resouces that gave practical, immediately useable information.Â
So, in those early days, I struggled. I was up all night, every night, desperately trying to find information that might help me the next day at the office. I spent a lot of time feeling like an imposter, as though someone would discover, at any minute, that I didn’t know what the hell I was doing.

LESSON 1 | Work Breakdown Structures Made Easy
Lesson one is all about bringing the team together to build something called the Work Breakdown Structure, or WBS. Not only is building the WBS the first step towards developing a solid plan, it’s your first opportunity to establish yourself as a leader and build a solid connection among team members.

Lesson 2 | Activity Sequencing
Lesson two walks you through the process of taking all of the activities identified in the WBS and shows you how to determine the real life relationships between activities. We use something called a Network Diagram or PERT Chart to do this. With the Network Diagram, we can use tools like Microsoft Project to calculate the REAL start and end dates for activities.

LESSON 3 | Creating The Project schedule in MS Project
Lesson three is where the rubber meets the road! I walk you through the steps needed to take your Network Diagram and input it into Microsoft Project. I also show you how to add resources, holidays and other items that are important for enabling MS Project to calculate accurate dates for your schedule. We will have a brief overview of how to use MS Project to create a forecast and we’ll go into detail about the tool I use to capture weekly updates from the team. We finish up with a discussion on how to use MS Project as an analysis tool, run what-if scenarios and find solutions when the team slips behind schedule.
